Greenland community on high alert as massive iceberg looms

Residents in Innaarsuit are on standby for evacuation as a result of an enormous iceberg is looming over the island community in northwestern Greenland.

The iceberg is so huge it is grounded on the ocean flooring.

On Tuesday a small part of it collapsed and triggered massive waves. Residents are afraid a tsunami will happen if the iceberg calves. Rivers close to the community might additionally expertise a water surge.

“There are 180 inhabitants and we’re very involved and are afraid,” stated Karl Petersen, chair for the native council in Innaarsuit.
