Several people are reported to have been killed in the horror crash that saw a coach go off the road in a hotel district on the holiday island. The coach has since been declared by Portuguese emergency services as once carrying holiday-makers. The incident happened near a botanical garden in the hotel district in Canixo, a quiet coastal community in the south-east of Madeira known as Canixo de Baixo.
At least fourteen ambulances are said to be at the scene, next to Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden and hotel.
No hotel guests have been harmed in the incident.
Local reports said the driver had lost control of the vehicle on a bend, careered off the road and crashed onto the top of a house.
Portuguese media are saying there are “several dead” although it is not immediately clear if the casualties are foreign tourists on the coach or were in the house.
Footage showing survivors being carried away has since been posted on social media.
The incident happened at 6.30pm.
Local mayor Filipe Sousa confirmed: “There are dead but it is not clear how many.”
A receptionist at Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden, which is a hotel set in a large expense of landscaped botanical gardens, confirmed the incident had happened very near to the hotel but said it did not involve any hotel guests.
Distressing video showed the walking wounded being helped away from the scene by emergency responders. Several survivors were sat by the side of the road.
Portugal’s leading tabloid Correio da Manha is saying “at least” nine people have been confirmed as dead.
