WestJet dispatchers seek to unionize


Flight dispatchers at WestJet are the newest group of workers on the airline in search of to be a part of a union.

The Canadian Airline Dispatchers Affiliation (CALDA) stated in a launch that they’ve filed an utility with the Canada Industrial Relations Board to signify dispatchers on the service.

“As WestJet continues to develop and evolve, WestJet flight dispatchers believed it was important to consider which worker illustration mannequin was finest suited to signify flight dispatchers,” CALDA stated.

A printed report stated there are about 78 dispatchers at WestJet. An organization spokesperson has stated the airline respects the rights of the dispatchers to select their illustration.

 The affiliation stated it already represents dispatchers for Air Canada, Jazz Airways, First Air, Sunwing and Air Transat. CALDA stated including the WestJet dispatchers brings its membership to nearly 300.

Dispatchers are licensed by Transport Canada and share dispatch duties with the pilot in command, the affiliation stated. Dispatchers draw up flight plans by factoring in climate, airspace, plane weight and gasoline wants.

In late July, about 3,000 WestJet cabin crew members grew to become formally unionized after the Canada Industrial Relations Board issued an interim order naming the Canadian Union of Public Staff because the licensed bargaining unit for workers.
